Earth worms to be used as bait

Earth worms, a very underused and under estimated bait, have proven to be effective as a bait for catching many different species of fish.

Worms, do however tend to be more effective on Bream (Kurper) and other smaller fish species. This is probably because of their size and softness versus the bigger size of some other baits that can only be picked up by larger fish.

Where to get earthworms and what type of worms to use

Most angling shops sell worms in little plastic holders. Try to find the “Kariba” type. A lot of anglers who uses worms as bait swear by this type of worm.

To catch worms in your yard make sure the ground is loose and rich in feeding value, then place a black or green plastic bag on the ground and wet it with a sprayer. Do this for a few days and the worms are sure to come to the top!

Storing Worms

The storing of the worms for fishing trips is very important. Keep them in a dark container. Paint it black if you must because worms die of light. Also keep the ground moist but not wet! You also get neat worm holders for sale at most angling shops which have a lid on both sides which makes it very easy to catch the worms if they dig themselves to the bottom of the container.

Applying the worms to you rig

There are many different ways you can apply the worms to your rig. You can either put one worm on the hook and try to cover the whole hook, or you can have a few worms on one hook. This is the method I use. Also you don’t have to apply the worms directly to the hook. Using a hair rig is another underused method for fishing with worms as bait. In this way the worms stay in tact and you can put a mallow floaty on the hook if you need to lift the hook from the ground a bit if the dam has a lot of grass.
