Saturday started rather slowly and we had to be satisfied with only 5 fish for the day. Because of the bad weather we didn’t fish during the night and decided to start early the next morning. Sunday started much the same as the previous day and Willem suggested we target the smaller fish by applying smaller pieces of dough using a combination of banjo and kap-kap. We eventually ended the day with a total of 32 fish weighing only 5.78kg. I do however have to add that none of our neighbours caught any fish, just stressing the important difference smaller fish can make to your results during a club competition. As suggested in our previous post (The importance of accurate casting) , accurate casting in combination with the correct targeting strategy can greatly improve your success rate.

My day started off recently well and I caught three small carp within the first few minutes, then the wind speed picked up and the bite rate slowed down. My neighbour suggested smaller hooks and I changed my dip choices from FX to garlic which seemed to do the trick. At the end of the day I weighed in a total of 11 fish with a combined weight of 5.35 kg. When the overall winner was asked about his bait choices, he simply replied with the following: “Accurate casting…”

With limited knowledge of the bank at Baja dam and with only a small amount of time to fish , we decided to take the gamble and drove to Baja dam late Saturday afternoon. We arrived as the sun was setting and immediately knew that the success of our fishing trip was going to be determined by the spot we choose. We quickly identified three of the available fishing spots as possibilities. The difference between a successful session or the dreaded blank can be determined by the thoroughness of testing done before a venue is chosen. We immediately eliminated two of our potential spots by casting different sized weights and dragging them along the bottom.

With the venue elimination process behind us our focus shifted to the preparation of our ground baits , feeding spots and of course the different hook baits and dip flavours. In the hours that followed we lost a total of 4 fish between 2am and 4am. This was to say the least frustrating and we had to rethink our strategy. Bigger hooks , smaller baits was the verdict and Willem thankfully saved us from a blank with 2 decent sized carp within minutes of each other.

This trip was a reminder that there are a lot of factors to consider when planning your fishing session. The spot, weather, baits and tackle used all play an important part when it comes to your success (or lack thereof). Every now and again we are reminded that there is still a lot to learn and practice , and all that we can do is to persist … persist … persist

Andre Joubert drowned Sunday afternoon near Villiers while swimming in the Vaaldam. Around 11:00 Andre posted the following status update on Facebook: “Sitting next to the vaal catching sum AWSUM sized fish!!!!!!!!!!!!! couldn’t be betta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”. An hour later he drowned.

A man was shot and killed this weekend at De Rust, Hartebeespoort dam. Six men approached mr. Jaco de Jager and his friend Hennie Jones. De Jager was shot in his camping chair and died in the arms of his wife. You can read the original article as it was written in Beeld here

Please make sure that you always visit De Rust and nearby venues as a group. We do not recommend camping at this moment in time. The owner claims that security takes priority and that they are working hard to improve the safety of their campers. Unfortunately, as an angling community we can only rely on ourselves when it comes to safety at our fishing venues. This is an unforgiving and selfish act by people with no regard for human life.

Our prayers are with the family of the victim.

I recently had the opportunity to hunt on a private game farm. These opportunities do not present themselves often and I grabbed it with both hands, leaving the office earlier than usual Friday afternoon. Saturday morning we stalked some Waterbuck to no prevail and I decided to target a “Cone head” (more commonly refered to as a Rooihartbees). With a succesful mornings hunting session behind us, I decided to wait at a watering hole for some warthogs. This of course is a time consuming exercise and the activity of the barbel in the shallows soon had me searching for the fishing rod at the back of my bakkie. Unfortunately a spoon is not the best lure to use when a lot of water grass is present and it was soon back to sitting…scouting…waiting, wishing I remembered my tackle box.

Hours passed before we spotted the elusive pig, my fishing problems suddenly something of the past. That night, with a Rooihartbees, a few impalas, a warthog and waterbuck in the freezer, a camp fire going and a castle lager in hand, I thanked God once again that we can call ourselves sons of Africa.
